Kumar Sanu (alias Kedarnath Bhattacharya (Bengali:কেদারনাথ ভট্টাচার্য) born on September 23, 1957 Kolkata) is a leading playback singer of Bollywood.

Early life:

Kumar Sanu's father Pashupati Bhattacharjee was an accomplished classical vocalist and composer. He trained Sanu as a singer and tabla player. After getting a degree in commerce from Calcutta University, Sanu began performing publicly in 1979, singing at shows and restaurants around Calcutta.He modeled his singing style after famous Bollywood singer Kishore Kumar. Sanu tried to make a career in Bollywood, but did not achieve success for a long time. He made his living in the early 1980s partly by recording a series of Kishore Kumar covers for a pop label. His son, Jaan Sanu has also made inroads into singing by going into a semi final of a singing contest held in India.

Early career:

In 1987, music director and singer Jagjit Singh offered Sanu the chance to sing in the Hindi film Andhiyan. Sanu then relocated to Mumbai, where Kalyanji-Anandji gave him chance to sing in the filmJadoogar. Kalyanji-Anandji suggested that he change his name from Kedar Bhattacharya to Kumar Sanubecause of the prevalent caste/region-based favoritism in Bollywood and to give him wider appeal outside of a strictly Bengali audience

1990s:

Sanu's breakthrough came in 1990, in form of the film Aashiqui. The music directors Nadeem-Shravan got Sanu to sing all but one of the songs. Sanu gained overnight success. The hit songs from Aashiquiincluded Sanson ki zaroorat hai jaise, Tu meri zindagi hain, Nazar ke saamne, Jaane jigar jaaneman,Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum and Dheere, dheere se meri zindagi mein aana. He won the first of his recordfive consecutive Filmfare awards as Best Male Playback Singer. His next Filmfare Awards came for songs in the movies Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Baazigar (1993), and 1942: A Love Story (1994).

Sanu became a favorite with Nadeem-Shravan. He rendered many hit songs in movies like Sadak (Tumhe apna bana ne ki kasam khayi hai), Deewana (title song), Baazigar (title song, Kali kali ankhen), Saajan (Jeeye to jeeye kaise, Mera dil bhi kitna pagal hai), Pardes (Meri Mehbooba, Do dil mil rahe hain), and others.

In late 1990s, Sanu singing career went into decline. He then branched out into acting, appearing ina Bengali film and starting television serials in both Bengali and Hindi. He also did some concerts.

His most recent hit songs include Humraaz, Yeh Dil Aapka Huwa (Pakistan), Karz, Dil Ka Rishta, Indian Babu, Ishq Vishk, Andaaz, Qayamat, Hungama and Footpath. He has also turned his trade at making music for Indian films and also recently as a producer for a new Bollywood film, Utthaan.

Personal life:

Shaan was born into a Bengali family. He is the son of the late music director Manas Mukherjee and brother of singer Sagarika. He is married to Radhika and has two sons, Soham and Shubh. He is the grandson of Jahar Mukherjee.

Career:

As a child, Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles. After giving it up for a brief period, he soon returned to it, and also began to sing remixes and cover versions. In the 1987 movie Parinda, when he was only 15 years of age, Shaan sang a singular line in the song, Kitni Pyari Hai Dosti Hamari.

His career began in 1995 with his first release, the remix album called Q-funk. However, he first achieved real success with Roop Tera Mastana, a remixed version of R D Burman's hits. In 1996, Shaan and his sister, Sagarika came out with Naujawan, their first big release. The album received a positive response from the public. Later in 1996 Shaan went solo with an album called Love-o-logy,which did not achieve similar success.

After creating the album Tanha Dil, released in 2000, containing a mix of ballads and tunes, Shaan's career skyrocketed. The album established him as a distinctive and talented singer, as well as winning him the MTV Music Awards Asia, Best Solo Album award. Three years later Shaan launched his album Aksar which was again hugely successful. The album contained songs featuring international stars such as Blue, Mel C. and Samira Said. For both the albums Tanha Dil and Aksar, Shaan displayed his great talents by singing, composing and writing the lyrics of his songs. He plans to release an album remaking his father's compositions with his sister.

Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai , Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus, Salaam Namaste, Don - The Chase Begins Again, Fanaa and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. He hosted the television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, which won the Music Programme of the Year award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2003. At the same awards function, Shaan won Best TV Music Director, for creating the music of the Zee TV show, Lipstick, for friend, Goldie Behl.

He also appeared as the guest in the first episode of the new show Antakshari: The Great Challenge which aired on 9 February 2007 on Star One.

Popular songs by Shaan include his first hit, "Musu Musu", as well as "Tanha Dil" and "Bhool Ja" from his albums and the very popular song "Chand Sifarish". Recently he has released an album with MLTR namely "Take me to your heart", which is on his latest album entitled Tishnagi.

Along with singing, Shaan has also acted in the movie, Daman, also starring Raveena Tandon. He has made appearances in his songs in the movies, Zameen and Hungama.

Shaan is also a very popular choice for 'Pro Shows' which are conducted as a part of the cultural festivals of various colleges. Among the prominent cult festivals where he has performed live recently are Mood Indigo of IIT Bombay and Raagam of NIT Calicut.

His song "Chand Sifarish" from the movie Fanaa (2006) won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award and the Zee Cine Award Best Playback Singer- Male apart from receiving several other nominations.

Shaan has also been a judge on many talent hunt shows.

Early life:

Abhijeet was born as Abhijeet Bhattacharya in a middle-class Bengali family in Kanpur, the youngestof four siblings. He passed his class X (Ten) from Ram Krishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Kanpur and Class XII (Twelfth) from B.N.S.D. Inter College, Kanpur. Although his parents were against the idea, Abhijeet went against their wishes and became a singer.

Career:

Abhijeet left home for Mumbai in 1981 to study Chartered Accountancy. Due to his fascination for singing and music, he decided to pursue a career in playback singing and quit Chartered Accountancy.Despite being gifted with a melodious voice, he struggled for a long time. After his long strugglein Bombay, he received a call from Rahul Dev Burman to sing for Dev Anand's sons debut film. Abhijeet also sang with Kishore Kumar, his idol, in the same film.

In the 1990s, Abhijeet established himself as a notable playback singer. His first notable hits were the songs from the film Baaghi, composed by Anand-Milind - Ek chanchal shokh hasina, Chandni raat hai and Har kasam se badi hai. He went on the give hit numbers in the movies Baadshah, Yeh Dillagi, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Josh, Dhadkan, Chalte Chalte, Main Hoon Na.Abhijeet has given his voice for actors such as Sunil Shetty, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, and Shahrukh Khan.

Non-film music:

After his success in playback singing, Abhijeet decided to try non-film pop music. He released two albums, Main Deewana Hoon and Tapori No.1. The albums did not achieve commercial success. After these two pop albums, he launched Aashiqui, which was appreciated by the audience. Recently, he has launched a pop album, called Tere Bina, whose songs and videos are chartbusters. On May 3, 2006, he released another non-film album called Lamhe, which was well-appreciated.

Shahrukh Khan (born November 2, 1965) (Hindi: शाहरुख़ ख़ान, Hindko: شاہ رخ خان) is a highly acclaimed Bollywood actor, producer, and recent host of the game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati.Khan started out his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s. He made his film debut with the hit Deewana (1992) and has been part of numerous commercial successes as well delivering a variety of critically acclaimed performances. During his career years, he has won six Filmfare Best Actor Awards, and has had significant box office success, with films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) being some of India's biggest hits, while films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) Veer Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) are the biggest Bollywood hits in the overseas market. Since then, Khan has establishedhimself as one of the most prominent leading actors in Bollywood. Since 2000, he has branched out into film production and television presenting as well.

Biography:

Shahrukh Khan was born to a Muslim family and raised by Hindus for most of his life. He believes inboth religions. His father Taj Mohammed Khan was a freedom activist. His mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan, who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose.

Khan's father came to Delhi from the Kissa Kahani Bazaar in Peshawar now in Pakistan, before the Partition of India, while his mother's family came from Rawalpindi, also in Pakistan. Khan has a sister named Shehnaz, who is lovingly known as Lalarukh. Khan attended St. Columba's School where he was accomplished in sports, drama and academics. He won the Sword of Honour, an annual award bequeathed to the student who embodies most the spirit of the school. He later attended the Hansraj College (1985-1988) to earn an Honors degree in Economics. After this, he studied for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Jamia Millia Islamia University.

After the death of his parents, Khan moved from New Delhi to Mumbai in 1991. In 1991, he married Gauri Khan in a Hindu wedding ceremony. They have two children, son Aryan (b. 1997) and daughter Suhana (b. 2000). Nasreen Munni Kabir, the noted British filmmaker, produced a two-part documentaryon Khan, titled The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan (2005). Featuring his 2004 Temptationsconcert tour, the film contrasted Khan's inner world of family and daily life with the outer worldof his work. Another book Still Reading Khan was released in 2006 which details his family and hislife.

Khan's life-size wax statue is available in Madame Tussauds wax museum. London, installed in April 2007 Khan has been chosen for the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award of the French government for his “exceptional career”.

As Actor:

Khan studied acting under celebrated Theatre Director Barry John, at Delhi's Theatre Action Group (TAG). In 2007 John commented on his former pupil, "The credit for the phenomenally successful development and management of Shah Rukh's career goes to the superstar himself." Khan started his acting career in 1988 appearing in the television series Fauji playing the role of Commando Abhimanya Rai. He went on to appear in other television serials such as the 1989 serial Circus, which depicted the life of circus performers. That same year he also had a minor role in the television film In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones, which was written by Arundhati Roy and based on life at Delhi University.

After the death of his parents Khan moved from New Delhi to Mumbai in 1991. He made his Bollywood film debut in Deewana (1992) which was a box office hit and launched his career in Bollywood. His debut performance won him a Filmfare Best Debut Award. His second release Maya Memsaab was known for its controversial issues as Khan appeared in what was apparently an "Explicit for Bollywood" sex scene for the film. In 1993 he won acclaim for his performances as a murderer and obsessive lover respectively in the box office hits Baazigar and Darr. He won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Baazigar. He was also appreciated for his role as a young loser in Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa which earned him the Filmfare Best Actor Award (critics) that same year. In 1994 Khan once again played an obsessive lover/psycho role in Anjaam. Even though the movie wasn't a box office success Khan's performance in a negative role earned him the Filmfare Best Villain Award.

In 1995 he starred in Aditya Chopra's directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which was a critical and commercial success and has entered its twelfth year in Mumbai theaters, grossing over 12 billion rupees in all, making it as one of the biggest film blockbusters. 1996 was a disappointingyear for Khan as all his films released that year flopped. 1997 meant his diminutive comeback, as his first release, Yash Chopra's Dil to Pagal Hai went on to be the year's second highest grossing film. That same year he also had success with Subhash Ghai's Pardes which was one of the biggest hits of the year and Aziz Mirza's moderately successful film Yes Boss.

Khan was welcomed with similar success in 1998 starring in Karan Johar's directional debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which was the biggest hit of the year and won him his fourth Best Actor award at the Filmfare. He also won critical praise for his performance in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se which did not do well at the box office in India, but earned good collections overseas. 1999 was another non-notable year for Khan with the average hit Baadshah as his only film release that year. The year 2000 saw mixed success, with Aditya Chopra's second directional film Mohabbatein doing well at the box office, and Mansoor Khan's hit Josh. He gained critical acclaim for his performance in the former, which won him his second award for Best Actor (critics) at the Filmfare. In that same year, Khan set up his own production house Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla. Both Khan and Chawla starred in the first film from their production house Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. He also played a supporting role in Kamal Hassan's controversial film Hey Ram.

In 2001, Khan collaborated with Karan Johar for the second time with the multi-starrer family dramafilm Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which was one of the biggest hits of the year. He also received favorable reviews for his performance as Emperor Asoka in the historical epic Asoka, which was the second film from his production house. In 2002, Khan played the title role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's award-winning period romance Devdas (2002). This was the third Hindi adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's famous novel of the same name after the 1936 version Devdas and the 1955 version Devdas which had Kundan Lal Saigal and Dilip Kumar playing the role respectively.

In 2003, Khan starred in the romantic drama Chalte Chalte which was the first successful film for his production company. He then made his third film with Karan Johar, in Nikhil Advani's directional debut Kal Ho Naa Ho. The movie was one of the year's biggest hits in India and in the overseas market as well. Khan's performance as a guy who has heart disease was also well received. 2004 proved to be a good year for Khan commercially and critically as well. He set up another productioncompany called Red Chillies Entertainment, and starred in its first film Main Hoon Na, directed byFarah Khan. The movie did well at the box office, whilst Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara was the biggest hit of that year. Khan's performance in the latter was much appreciated and he won various awards at several award ceremonies. Khan also won critical praise for his performance in Ashutosh Gowariker'sSwades, which won him the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the sixth time although the film was a box office failure.

His only major film release in 2005 was Paheli which was also produced by Red Chillies Entertainment.It was not as successful at the box office, but won him acclaim. In 2006 he once again collaborated with Karan Johar in the multi-starrer drama film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which did well in India and became the biggest hit in the overseas market. That same year he played the title role in Don, a remake of the 1978 hit film Don which was also successful His most recent film was the sports film Chak De India which released on August 10, 2007. Khan received good reviews for his performance in the film and the film is doing well at the box office despite a slow start. As a Producer:

Khan has also produced some of the films he has starred in but has had mixed success as both the producer and the star of his films. He set up a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza in 1999. The first two of the films he produced and starred in: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Asoka (2001) were box office failures. His third film, as a producer and star, Chalte Chalte (2003), was the first box office hit from his production house. That same year he also co-produced the supernatural horror film Kaal with Karan Johar and performed an item number for the film with Malaika Arora Khan. Kaal was moderately successful at the box office.The forthcoming film produced by his company Red Chillies Entertainment is Om Shanti Om which he will also star in.

As Television Host:

Khan was chosen as the host of the third series of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?, in 2007 taking over from the original host Amitabh Bachchan who had hosted the show from 2000 to 2005. The show is deemed the most popular programme in Indian television history. On Monday, January 22, 2007, "KBC" aired with Khan as the new host. The season ended on April 19 2007.

Sonu Nigam (Hindi: सोनु निगम), born July 30, 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana, India, is a playback singerwhose songs have been featured in numerous Bollywood movies. He has also released numerous Indi-popalbums. He changed the spelling of his last name from Nigam to Niigaam to reflect an auspicious number in astrology.Born in Faridabad, Sonu moved to Delhi with his family. He attended J.D.Tytler School. His father Agam Kumar is also a singer, Sonu also has two younger sisters, of which One, Neekita Nigam is a singer. At the age of four and half Sonu started singing Rafi's numbers at concerts where Sonu's father performed. Discovered and promoted by Gulshan Kumar of T-Series, who gave him his first break. Soon due to his recordings Sonu moved from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue his career, at the age of 19.
Career:

Sonu started his career singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs. His first movie as a playback singer was (Janum) which was a major flop in (1990). This film was not officially released due to some reason but some considered it as a flop. Again he got his big break as a playback singer in Gulshan Kumar's film (Aaja Meri Jaan) and then "Accha Sila Diya Tune" (also sung in Gujarati) from Bewafa Sanam (1996). At this time, he also started hosting Sa Re Ga Ma, a television singing talent competition that became one of the most popular shows on Indian television. Thereafter, the offers poured in, albeit slowly at first. He shot to fame with the song "Sandese Aate Hai" from Border (1997). In the initial stages, he was type-cast as a Rafi-sound-alike. The image was transformed after his brilliant rendition of "Yeh Dil, Deewana" in the film Pardes (1997). Since then, he has created a unique trademark style of his own.

Over the years, Sonu Nigam has become a major force in the music industry. He has released a number of pop albums including Mausam, Sapnay Ki Baat, Kismat, Deewana, Jaan, Yaad, Chanda Ki Doli and Colours of Love, as well as a Punjabi album 'Pyar'. Besides SaReGaMa, he has also hosted Kisme Kitna Hai Dum and been a judge on Indian Idol. Sonu how acted in a few films as well, namely Jaani Dushmaan alongside Sunny Deol, Manisha Koirala and Akshay Kumar as well as other actors, Kash Aap Hamare Hote where he plays the lead opposite Juhi Babbar daughter of Raj Babbar who too is in this movie and lastly Love in Nepal with Flora Saini and Sweta Keswani, where he plays the lead again but opposite Flora. However it is to be said that all three films have not done terribly well at the box-office. Recently though, he started hosting his own radio programme called Life Ki Dhun With Sonu Nigam on Radiocity 91 FM, where he has had the opportunity of interviewing industry greats, including the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. This radio show is available on the net. His future projects was to do indaa pora lina in japan. include a semi-classical album, an English album and an album covering 18 of the greatest Mohammad Rafi songs (recently announced).

Sonu has sung playback for countless Hindi movies. As well, he is a popular playback singer for many regional movies, singing effortlessly in many languages from Kannada, Punjabi to Bengali to Telugu, and many more. He is very famous in South Indian movies especially in Kannada with Recent hit films like Mungaaru Male.Recently, he has also sung in Tamil, in the film Kireedam.

Sonu will be touring North America in May/June 2007 in a star-studded show called the Incredibles with singing legend Asha Bhonsle, as well as current singing sensations Kunal Ganjawala and Kailash Kher. On September 9, 2007, he will be in Toronto, Canada.

Controversy:

On 17th July, 2007 Sonu Nigam stunned the Bollywood industry with an open letter to a national newspaper, accusing a senior film journalist of sexual harrassment. Sonu stated that he was being forced to accept homosexual advances, and when he refused them the journalist pressured (threatened)him by constant negative press, which included criticism of his work, singing and acting, as well as circulating rumours. Sonu felt compelled to make a public statement because it was beginning to affect his family life. This courageous step on his part has led to other industry victims speakingout about the "casting couch" in Bollywood. The subject has been discussed extensively in the media.Sonu has stated that he hopes it will bring this issue out into the open, and will help prevent this from happening to others entering the industry.
